Contemporary renovation

Refurbishment of a Grade I Listed apartment within the magical Inner Temple sanctum. Our brief was to create a wonderfully relaxed home designed to fit modern family life whilst respecting the character and architecture of the 17thC building.

Working with English Heritage, the compact apartment was sensitively modified to allow access to the listed features. Kitchen units have removable backing and wall units are hung from false walls leaving the orginal features in tact.

Incredibly complex footprint with cabinetry concealing fireplaces and false walls

Pentagon-shaped, it had a listed fireplace and panelling, virtually no storage or surface preparation areas and was exceptionally compact. With the apartment being a Grade I property, we had to work alongside English Heritage and the Inner Temple. We couldn’t damage the panelling or the fireplace, so this already compact space was further reduced with the installation of false walls concealing the listed parts allowing us to fit and hang the new cabinetry. Additionally, the units had to have removable backing allowing for English Heritage inspections. Refining to a palette of three, making the kitchen feel spacious, inviting and easy to navigate.

The bathroom was sited on 2 levels with curved stairs, acute angles and a tiny footprint. Travertine tiles, walnut details and Amtico flooring created pared back elegance with compact sanitaryware and flush fitting bath.

Testimonial

"Narrowly surviving the Great Fire in 1666, Colliss & Quinton were tasked to bring this Grade I apartment into the 21st Century for harmonious family living. Reworking the flow and function of the rooms and streamlining materials made compact rooms feel open, light-filled and contemporary. With three sets of clients to delight (our family, English Heritage and the Inner Temple) this was a hugely rewarding project."
